CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Candy DeValla was in the passenger seat of Keeler’s Toyota. They were winding their way up into the hills again. Streetlights made pools of yellow on the frozen salt-dusted road. The forest was an angular thatch of branch geometry in the sweep of headlights. The temperature had dropped even further. Candy was looking at the window, frosted with a fine network of crystals.

She found Keeler fascinating.

He was an alert predator, feline, quiet, and dangerous. Candy’s new friend Vitalek was still asleep, head tucked back in the corner with his backpack for a pillow. Candy liked him. He was cute and snored gently, like a squirrel. Vitalek was intense, but in a goofy funny way. Keeler was intense but different, relaxed at the same time, but not exactly funny and definitely not goofy. No man could be in a room with him and feel a hundred percent in charge.

The kind of guy women fantasize about and who’s a little intimidating in person. Vitalek, by contrast, was the kind of guy who made the people around him feel comfortable.

For example, the situation at the diner.

Vitalek was in the bathroom when four hard guys came up to the counter and took the four stools, as if it wasn’t obvious that one of the seats was already taken. Candy had said something and been ignored. She was gearing up to get aggravated, when she saw Vitalek coming out of the bathroom. They made eye contact, her brows knitted, ready for the fight. Vitalek held her gaze and nodded slightly, respecting her disposition and offering his own in exchange. He’d understood the situation in an instant and done exactly the opposite of what she’d expected. He’d de-escalated without the bullies even noticing and gotten his grilled cheese to go with an extra pickle.

Vitalek had leaned over and whispered in her ear. “Not worth it. Let’s get out of here.”

Her heart had skipped a beat.
